🌍 Earth Day Reflections: A Legacy of Action, A Future to Protect

Every April 22, we pause to recognize Earth Day, a moment to reflect on the environmental strides we’ve made since 1970 and recommit to the work that still lies ahead. But this year’s Earth Day feels especially urgent.

In a powerful piece titled “April 22, 2025,” historian Heather Cox Richardson revisits the origins of Earth Day and tracks the political and environmental shifts that have shaped our nation’s relationship with the planet. From Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring to the Santa Barbara oil spill and the bipartisan efforts that once fueled environmental protections, Richardson paints a vivid picture of where we’ve been, and where we may be heading.

She also highlights the concerning recent developments under the current administration, including a transfer of power within the Department of the Interior that could drastically alter the future of public lands and environmental stewardship in the United States.

At the Democratic Club of Greater Tracy, we believe environmental justice is social justice. We believe in science, accountability, and the responsibility we all share to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the planet we call home.

This isn’t just about Earth Day, it’s about every day.

We encourage our members, neighbors, and fellow advocates to read Richardson’s article, reflect on the challenges ahead, and stay engaged in the fight for environmental progress.
